Marty's Obit On August 13, 2012 Elmer Martin (Marty) Doerksen passed away in Victoria, B.C. after becoming ill while on the last day of an Alaskan cruise. Dad lived his life to the fullest, going and going like the ‘ever ready’ bunny until the frailty of his body finally caught up to him. Like the patriarch he truly was, his family gathered around him during his final days both gaining and giving comfort until his end. Our Dad was born on November 5, 1922 in Santana, Kansas of Canadian parents. He moved to Canada when his parents returned to Manitoba when he was about 10 yrs old. He joined the Army, spending most of his career as a Military Policeman until his retirement 25 yrs later. During his service he was posted overseas a number of times both to Korea (1953 to 1955) and to Germany with his family (1957 to 1960). After retiring, he worked as a security officer at the Royal Alberta Museum and then as a Safety Officer at the University of Alberta where he retired for the second time at age 64. Dad, the ultimate handy man and his wife Edna (Andy) spent many glorious hours renovating their acreage in Ellerslie, just outside Edmonton. With age and ill heath, Dad eventually settled in Rosedale at Griesbach in Edmonton with his wife Edna (Andy) of 61 years, however, shortly after the move, his wife passed away. Dad made many additional friends here and he would frequently comment on how much he enjoyed talking to his new and old friends at coffee, or during meetings for the KVA (Korean Veterans Association) or the Legion. He still maintained many of the friends he had made while mom was alive, going for breakfast every Saturday with their good friends Pete and Millie. Dad’s mind remained sharp to the end, and he spent many hours in front of his computer drafting letters and emails to friends (his email handle was “peg leg marty”) and authorities, bringing attention to those issues he thought important. He will be missed by many but especially his family. Dad was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his four children, Diane (Art) Danielson, Wanda (Brian) Fish, Dan (Linda) Doerksen and George (Jill) Doerksen and one sister, Wanda Reimer. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren. His wife, Edna Matilda Doerksen , a grandchild, Patricia Danielson and his two brothers and one sister predeceased him. A memorial service will be held at Rosedale at Griesbach, 4480 McCrae Avenue NW, Edmonton Alberta on Friday, August 31 at 1:00 pm to commemorate his life.
